Earth Day History For Today & Tools For Tomorrow

Did you know that Earth Day was founded by Gaylord Nelson, former U.S. Senator from Wisconsin? 2023 marks the 53rd anniversary since its inception on April 22, 1970. According to the Wisconsin Historical Society, the concept to raise awareness for environmental concerns originated from Nelson’s efforts back in 1969. He did this through a national teach-in on environmentalism, modeled after those on the war in Vietnam.

The site, Gaylord Nelson and Earth Day, stated that viewing an oil spill in Santa Barbara ultimately caused Nelson to take action. He organized environmentalists which, “resulted in the largest demonstration in U.S. history.” He later stated that Earth Day, ‘organized itself.’ On that day 53 years ago he said, ‘Our goal is not just an environment of clean air and water and scenic beauty. The objective is an environment of decency, quality and mutual respect for all other human beings and all living creatures.’

The goal is to encourage all to celebrate Earth Day, whether that’s pledging to eliminate wasteful practices, planting a tree, or cleaning up trash from your neighborhood. The hope is that we each view today, tomorrow, next week, and the years to come as Earth Day, every day.
